The U.S. Embassy Rangoon announced on its Facebook page that the Embassy is working with World Monuments Fund to preserve the First Baptist Church in Mawlamyine through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, with an award of $125,000. Currently, the World Monuments Fund experts are assessing the condition of the church and planning conservation work over a two-year period. The project will use the First Baptist Church as an educational opportunity to introduce local professionals, students and officials to cultural and architectural heritage conservation methods, building skills among local professionals that can be applied to similar sites in Mawlamyine and surrounding areas.

Brief History of First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church was founded by Adoniram Judson, an American missionary who spent nearly 40 years in Myanmar in the early 19th century. The building is a masterful blend of Western and local elements, with the materials and building technology speaking directly to Mon cultural traditions and crafts expertise.
